The Public Forum Debate Institute is geared toward teaching students debate skills needed for success in school and in competitive debate. Taught by leading renowned debate coaches, the institute teaches students the skills of effective case construction, brief writing, researching, rebuttals, cross-fire, evidence analysis, summary and final focus. Students will leave the Capitol Debate Summer Institute ready to be successful debaters.
Small Group Seminars
- Practicums
The Public Forum Debate Institute Practicums challenge
debaters to apply materials learned in lectures. Immediately following
each skill or theory lecture, debaters split up into small groups of
equal experience levels to put the materials discussed in the lecture
into practice. After a lecture on case construction,
for example, students will meet in small groups and brainstorm the construction of their case. Through
instructor guidance, debaters come up with winning strategic moves that
they can use in future debates. Through these exercises, we have witnessed
the growth of many debaters.
Skills Development
Critical to success in public forum debate is the ability to effectively debate a wide range of topics. The Capitol Debate Faculty is dedicated to teaching you advanced skills in:
Refutation
Case Construction
Brief Writing
Evidence Analysis
Research
Case Criteria Development
Delivery
Issue Selection
Summary and Final Focus Writing
Practice, Practice, Practice
Capitol
Debaters will start doing practice speeches early in the institute and
receive lengthy feedback on how to improve and then deliver speech redos
the next day. We watch all debaters carefully, drafting copious notes
for improvement in each debater's notebook, and then challenge the debaters
to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Our aim is
to see a progression of improvement by the time each debater leaves
the institute.
Topic Lectures & Strategies
Capitol Debate will give extensive lectures on
all facets of the different topic areas including foreign policy issues, domestic issues, legal issues, and ethical issues. We will focus on strategies that can win you debates.
