Centennial, Glenelg & Reservoir High Schools Debut in Debate Tournament
Glenelg Takes First Place
Howard County, Maryland
Nov 01, 2006
On Saturday October 28th, 3 Howard County High
Schools made their debut at a regional debate
tournament at Thomas Johnson High School in
Frederick, MD. Centennial, Glenelg and Reservoir High
Schools launched new debate programs this year
with the support of a local nonprofit Capitol Debate
which was started by Ronald Bratt.
The kickoff was a huge success with Glenelg's,
Christina Lee and Elizabeth Ferris, winning the novice
division of the debate tournament. Christina Lee was
awarded 2nd best speaker overall and Elizabeth Ferris
won top speaker honors. Leila Chawkat is the coach
of Glenelg. Reservoir's debaters, Eric McCullin and
Jeremy Plant, finished in 4th place in Novice under
the direction of their coach, Lisa Mariner. Centennial
had a good showing upsetting a strong team from
Loyola Blakefield High School. Centennial was
represented by Naomi Wossen and Kevin Li and
coached by Judy Ryan and Holly Pasciullo.
The regional debate tournament drew competitors
from Baltimore, Carroll, Anne Arundel, Frederick and
Howard County and included Loyola Blakefield,
McDonough, Pikesville, Thomas Johnson, Mt. St.
Joseph, Baltimore City College, Arundel, Atholton,
Wilde Lake, Calvert Hall, Westminster, Glenelg,
Reservoir and Centennial High School.
Howard County Administrators Commit to Debate Growth
The initiative to get more Howard County High
Schools involved in competitive debate was
spearheaded by Zeleana Morris, English/Language
Arts Coordinator, Kelli Midgley-Biggs, Wilde Lake
Coach and Ronald Bratt, CEO of Capitol Debate. The
goal is to have competitive debate in all high schools
in Howard County by 2011. Wilde Lake is the
premiere program which serves as a model for other
schools. Thomas Payne, Coordinator for Advanced
Programs and Fine Arts, is leading the effort to get
debate instituted in all middle schools in Howard
County. His efforts are already underway with many
middle schools having active teams competing
already.
"Glenelg's opening day success really demonstrates
the potential for Howard County Schools. Beating
long standing private school debate teams such as
the McDonough School and Loyola Blakefield in your
first outing to take overall prize is a rare feat and
just goes to show how talented our kids are in
Howard County," says Ronald Bratt, CEO of nonprofit
Capitol Debate.
Upcoming Debate Tournaments
The next debate tournament will be held at Arundel
High School on November 11th followed by the
largest tournament of the first half of the season at
Towson University on December 16th.
