Howard County Debate Teams Excel at Towson University Debate Tournament
Glenelg & Centennial Debaters Receive Top Ten Honors
Howard County, Maryland
December 19, 2006
Howard County’s new Debate Teams took the
Baltimore/Washington Metropolitan region by storm
last weekend, upsetting long standing debate teams
to win numerous awards. On December 16, 2006,
Towson University hosted one of the largest regional
high school policy debate tournaments in recent
history, with more than 250 teams from the
Baltimore/Washington region competing.
For individual awards, in her second debate
competition, Glenelg’s Elizabeth Ferris took 2nd Place
Speaker out of 130 competitors in the Junior Varsity
Division. Centennial’s Sid Patel took 6th Place
Speaker in the JV Division. Centennial’s Edward
Zhang was awarded 13th place speaker in Junior
Varsity in his first time competing. Centennial’s Kevin
Li and Yuris Kim received honorable mentions, as did
Christina Lee from Glenelg. In team competition,
Glenelg’s 2 person team of Elizabeth Ferris and
Christina Lee finished 9th overall, out of 65, with
Centennial’s teams of Yuris Kim/Scott Mu, Kevin
Li/Sid Patel and Janet Shin/Shirley Qin each receiving
honorable mentions.
Howard County Administrators Commit to Debate Growth
The debate teams at Centennial, Glenelg and
Reservoir High School are new programs started this
year with the support of Zeleana Morris,
English/Language Arts Coordinator for Howard County
Schools, Tom Payne, Coordinator for Advanced
Programs and Fine Arts for Howard County Schools,
and Kelli Midley-Biggs, coach at Wilde Lake High
School, with the assistance of Capitol Debate, a not-
for-profit organization dedicated to developing,
supporting and sustaining educational debate
programs nationwide. Capitol Debate, working in
conjunction with Morris and Payne, will target 3
additional high schools to start debate teams for the
2007-2008 school year. The goal is to have debate
teams in all high schools and middle schools in
Howard County.
“As anticipated, the Howard County students are
rising to the occasion. The success at Towson
University this past weekend was on the heels of two
other successful debate tournaments this fall. The
students are picking up debate quickly and I
anticipate more successes in the final 2 tournaments
of the year in February 2007,” says Ronald Bratt,
Founder of the not-for-profit consulting firm, Capitol
Debate.
